What are the different types of nursing programs?

ADN

An ADN nursing program is an Associate Degree in Nursing that typically takes two years to complete. This is a popular choice for those who want to be a registered nurse (RN) and enter the workforce quickly. This program provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and become licensed. An ADN will not get you a Bachelors in Nursing, but it will allow you to take the NCLEX examination and obtain your RN license. After doing so, you can bridge your ADN to a BSN through a university.

BSN

A BSN in nursing stands for Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is a four-year undergraduate degree program that prepares students to become registered nurses (RNs). The program includes both classroom instruction and clinical training. It also covers topics such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment and patient care. Graduates of a BSN program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam and become licensed as RNs. If one is interested in pursuing their masters, this is a great choice as that is the next step in the educational ladder.

ABSN

An ABSN stands for Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is a fast-track program designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree in a different field and want to become a registered nurse (RN). This typically takes 12-18 months to complete and preps students with the necessary clinical experience to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam and become licensed as an RN. The nursing prerequisites still apply to the student even if they have obtained a bachelor's degree. This program can be more rigorous considering the amount of material condensed in a short amount of time.

Paths to becoming a Nurse

Can't decide if you want to pursue an ADN, BSN, or ABSN? These programs all have very different timelines and tuition rates. For this reason, it is important to have a specific intention of which one you plan to pursue and why you choose that route.

Wondering if your program of interest is accredited?

The link below will direct you to the CCNE community website which will give you a directory of all accredited nursing programs.

Why is it important to make sure your Nursing Program is accredited?

Because if your program is not accredited the following will happen:

-

  • Not being eligible to take the NCLEX

  • Limiting your employment options (especially for healthcare employers who require accredited degrees)

Common Prerequisites

01.

02.

03.

04.

05.

Anatomy and Physiology

Understanding the structures of the human body will allow you to be able to intensify the health status of a patient one day. This prerequisite is most important because it tests your ability to comprehend and memorize information. This course is heavy volume wise, as that is similar to how your nursing classes will be. The specific program you're applying to will look closely at your grade in this course due to its similar difficulty levels as nursing courses.

Chemistry

The requirements for your chemistry prerequisite may differ depending on the college you choose to apply to. The two that are most often required are General Chemistry or Fundamentals of Chemistry. General Chemistry studies the arrangement and the constituent of molecules and atoms. Fundamentals of Chemistry is an intro to basic chemical principles - just a step below General Chemistry.

Biology

Biology prerequisites can range from the organization of life, cell & DNA structure, heredity, etc. Along with your basic Biology classes, some programs may require Microbiology which studies the biology and foundation of bacteria, viruses, and unicellular eukaryotes such as fungi and protozoa. This course specifically may not be required as a prerequisite, but it will be required to be completed by a specific semester in your nursing program.

Math Courses

Prerequisites for your math requirements can be tricky as there are many different courses in this category to register for and complete. Often times, statistics, college algebra, and precalculus or calculus courses may be required for your program of interest. Some schools may require a combination such as statistics and college algebra, or just college algebra and pre-calculus.

Psychology

Psychology courses are a common requirement among nursing programs. Some schools even require two psychology courses, while others will only require one. This may look like a lower level psychology class; this class studies with a research methodology approach followed by a developmental psychology class that studies how humans evolve.

About Me.

Hey there, my name is Carmen and I'm currently a traditional BSN student. Through my pre-nursing journey, I encountered many struggles such as advisors pushing credits on me that were not transferable to other universities, deciding between an ADN vs BSN route, prepping for the TEAS and HESI exams while taking nursing prerequisites, and trying to satisfy multiple nursing program admission requirements before specific deadlines. It can feel very overwhelming as a pre-nursing major considering all the steps you have to complete to even be considered for a seat in a program. This experience led me to create Nursing Recs: to help pave a concise and clear route that will lay the foundation for a strong application.
